Ecotrust Building — Billy Frank Jr. Conference Center
A certified green building in the Pearl District with rooftop terrace access and views of the city. Best when an outdoor component is central to the event concept. Outside catering welcome; indoor backup space is modest.
Editorial note
Ecotrust is a strong choice for couples who want a rooftop outdoor element in a Pearl District building with genuine sustainability credentials. The outdoor-to-indoor flow works well for summer and early-fall receptions; the indoor-only option is modest. Outside catering policy and a thoughtful building make it worth a tour for the right guest count and season.
Overview
The Ecotrust Building — home to the Billy Frank Jr. Conference Center — is a historic cannery building that was renovated to LEED platinum certification, making it one of the most sustainably operated event spaces in the city. The building has character that newer construction lacks: reclaimed wood, exposed structure, and materials with visible history.
The rooftop terrace is the primary draw for weddings. Pearl District views, open sky, and a distinctly Portland outdoor setting that works exceptionally well on a clear evening from late May through early October. The indoor conference spaces that serve as backup or dining areas are functional but not the reason to book this venue.
What works well
Rooftop outdoor access. Among Portland's indoor venues, outdoor access is limited. The Ecotrust rooftop provides a genuine outdoor element — ceremony space, cocktail hour, or dancing under the sky — within a Pearl District urban setting. For couples who want outdoor atmosphere without committing to a fully outdoor vineyard or park venue (with all the weather risk that entails), this is a meaningful middle option.
Outside catering. Ecotrust welcomes outside caterers, which is the right policy for a venue where sustainability and sourcing often matter to the couples it attracts. Portland's farm-to-table catering scene is strong; couples can choose a caterer whose sourcing practices align with the building's ethos.
Building character. Reclaimed wood, visible history, and genuine material quality give the space warmth that newer event spaces have to manufacture. It photographs well and doesn't need heavy decoration to feel like a place.
Limitations and tradeoffs
Weather dependency. The rooftop is the main event. When Portland's weather cooperates — July through early September, reliably — it works beautifully. Outside that window, rain is a real probability. The indoor backup is real but modest; couples should have an honest conversation about what an indoor-only reception at Ecotrust looks and feels like before booking a May or October date.
140-person capacity. The rooftop and indoor spaces together can accommodate around 140 seated guests. This is a firm ceiling; receptions over 150 need a different venue.
Basic A/V. The building is not optimized for event audio. Sound for dancing on the rooftop requires planning — sound ordinances, equipment setup, and neighbor considerations all apply in a Pearl District residential-adjacent context. Confirm what's permitted and what equipment is needed before committing.
